Soho
Soho is a really cool cluster of restaurants on the west end of Central. The area gets its name from its location, South of Hollywood Road, although by now some of the action has spilled over to the north side too. It is centres around the Central escalators and is a great place to try out the more international Hong Kong food. The location is really convenient since it is a good starting point for a night out, extremely close to the bars and clubs down in Lan Kwai Fong. Walking the opposite way up Hollywood Road there is a new, lesser known but trendy area called Kau U Fong, where a growing number of bars are popping up. As a relatively “white” district, Central has a lot of options for international fare, but there are less choices for genuine Chinese cuisine. The prices are fairly high by Hong Kong standards, but visitors from the West will probably still be happily surprised! Of course, many restaurants are also open in the middle of the day for lunch, and can be great if you are out and about exploring around Central and Sheung Wan. DirectionsFrom Central MTR station, go up the hill straight through Lan Kwai Fong, taking stairs or elevator up on the ledge, Wyndham Street. Turn west for a couple of minutes, until you reach the escalator system. Alternatively take the Central-to-Midlevels escalators up until reaching Hollywood Road. Recommended restaurantsSome of the best establishments in and around Soho, by cuisine. All of these are places where you shouldn't have to perform CPR on your wallet afterwards: British: Yorkshire Pudding: Supposedly a “British” restaurant (with London Tube logo and all), although the staff somehow seems more Nepalese. Nevertheless, the food is not bad! Cantonese: Luk Yu Tea House: One of the oldest and most famous dim sum restaurants, the traditional-looking interiors are particularly impressive. French: Brasserie Le Fauchon: A solid choice for fine dining. Hakka: Hakka Yé Yé offers a variety of traditional dishes of the Hakka people of southeast China. Slightly outside of Soho, on the second floor at Wyndham Street, this is something of a hidden gem for genuine Chinese food. Hong Kong: Kung Lee: Not really a restaurant, this little old café on 60 Hollywood Road is famous for its sugar cane juice. Italian: Cenacolo Steak & Pasta: It's hard to go really wrong with Italian food. This restaurant at 45-53 Graham Street certainly doesn't. Japanese: Yachiyo Ramen: Affordable but tasty noodle shop on Lyndhurst Terrace. Mediterranean: Scirocco: Decent Mediterranean restaurant on top of the nice and very visible Staunton's Wine Bar. Mexican: El Taco Loco: An old fixture that offers tacos, quesadillas, and enchiladas. About as fancy as you would expect given the name. Neither the most genuine nor the highest quality food around, but a filling and fairly cheap alternative. Nepalese: Nepal: An old favourite for South Asian food, on 14 Staunton Street. Pizza: Daddyos: One of Hong Kong's best pizza places at 29 Staunton Street. Russian: Balalaika: For a great Russian restaurant, we have to get over to the LKF Tower over in Lan Kwai Fong. Salad: Just Salad: New fresh salad bar on 30 Cochrane Street. Shanghainese: Ning Po: An old and well-established restaurant with hairy crabs and all the other specialties of Shanghainese cuisine. Located in 2-18 D'Aguilar Street, LKF. Spanish: Tapeo: A great little tapas bar on 19 Hollywood Road. Return from Soho to Central Return from Soho to Destination Hong Kong travel guide
